Frequently asked questions

Q. Is This a Martial Arts Course?
A. No (However we do offer ju-jitsu instruction on request) myselfdefence have developed there self defence courses specifically with the everyday person in mind. We tailor our courses to suit the individual needs of our clients. All courses however are based on real life safety awareness scenarios. Martial Arts although spectacular when executed with speed and power by a seasoned practitioner are not always as practical as they could be when it comes to reality based effective and easy to remember “street” self protection techniques. It is possible to know too many techniques to the point where if the need arises under pressure confusion sets in.

Q. Do I Need To Be Fit?
A. You do not have to be fit or sporty or even completely able bodied, as we tailor our courses to suit. The self-protection we teach is a life skill and not a fitness or martial arts class. At myselfdefence we believe it is every individual’s right to self protection instruction. Having said this if you or your group want a more “full on” experience we can also cater for that.

Q. Do you train men and women?
A.
Yes, we teach both men and women. Again all courses are tailored to suit. We are happy to provide instruction to all female classes if requested. If as a ladies group you would prefer a female instructor please let us know.

Q. I work in the security industry. What can myselfdefence offer me?
A.
At myselfdefence we can offer conflict management and restraint techniques ideal for anyone working within the security industry. Our instructors have many years experience in the security industry and fully understand what actually works in a real conflict situation.

Q. Do you train people with specific needs?
A.
Yes, we can adapt courses to suit people with specific needs.

Q. Do you teach children?
A.
Yes, myselfdefence teaches in many schools and kids clubs, with an emphasis on fun. Children tend to learn more in a fun environment. In the case of children, a large proportion of the course is based around anti bullying as this seems to be a major problem in schools today even though governing bodies don’t seem to acknowledge this, it exists in schools all the same.

Q. Where is the training held?
A. myselfdefence
will usually come to your place of work, school or club. Courses are usually held during office/school hours but can run at a time to suit your individual requirements. Should you be unable to accommodate myselfdefence in your own facility a mutually convenient venue can be arranged upon request.

Q. How much space will be needed to train?
A.
An average size meeting/class room is usually big enough (dependent upon numbers). Some of our clients prefer to use a local gym. Gyms and leisure centre are always happy to rent a small studio. myselfdefence is always happy to help source such a venue close to your base should this be necessary.

Q. Do I need any equipment?
A.
No myselfdefence will provide all the necessary training equipment.

Q. What should I wear?
A.
Loose fitting clothes are recommended. Something like a tracksuit, T-shirt and trainers (simple gym wear). Also at the start of the course myselfdefence will request all jewellery to be removed. If any jewellery cannot be removed as in the case of some body piercing's these items should be covered with sticking plaster to avoid any injuries to either the wearer or any other participants of the course.

Q. Are there any number restrictions per course?
A.
There is no minimum number of participants as myselfdefence in many instances does 1 to 1 tuition. With regard to maximum numbers a myselfdefence instructor can teach clients at a ratio of 15 to 1 this ensures each person on the course receives sufficient individual attention. Should your group be larger than this myselfdefence can either, provide additional instructors, or additional courses can be run to accommodate the extra numbers.

Q. Do you have any testimonials?
A.
Yes. Use this link for or testimonials page.

Q. What are your contact details?
A.
Use this link for our contact us section and we will answer your query within 24 hours.

Q. How much do the courses cost?
A.
Because courses can be tailor made to suit your needs costs may vary from client to client. At myselfdefence we are happy to discuss your requirements and strive to provide the most desirable and cost-effective way to deliver our personal-defence system.
